Witness the Unbelievable Watch the Sea Eagles Soar in this Epic Game
A wildlife photographer has spoken of being over the moon after he was able to capture the incredibly rare moment a sea eagle plucked a shag from the water off the coast of Skye.
Experienced snapper Harry Martin, 29, was taking one of his usual wildlife photography workshops with a group on a Stardust boat trip from the island on Wednesday (November 24) when they came across the breathtaking scene.
We'd had a big group of about 10 photographers out with us, on what was an amazing boat trip already, Portree-based Harry explained.

We'd seen seals, we'd seen other sea eagles taking fish, and we'd seen dolphins, and then just as we were coming back into Portree Harbour I spotted what at first I thought was a large bird sitting on the water.
The full-time photographer, who has almost two decades of experience, couldn't contain his excitement as they got closer and realised it was a sea eagle with a very unusual catch.
He added: We could see this eagle with its wings up in the air, sitting there on the water, which is strange as they try their hardest to avoid getting too wet as it's quite dangerous for them.

The huge raptor, which is also known as a white-tailed eagle, had the large seabird, similar to a cormorant, firmly clamped in its talons and tried several times to lift it from the water.
Harry was able to snap off some incredible shots of the scene, showing the eagle carrying the black sea bird from the water before dropping it.
It obviously didn't have the energy to get the bird back to the cliff and eventually gave up and dropped the bird back into the water and flew off back to the cliffs on the shore.

Harry added that he isn't sure what became of the shag, but believes it was more than likely the sea eagle would have returned to claim its hard-fought prize once it had rested.
An unusual sight, as the eagles are usually better known for eating smaller quarry like fish, Harry, who has been snapping eagles for over seven years and runs workshops for aspiring photographers from Portree, was utterly amazed at having been able to photograph it.
I was over the moon, he exclaimed. The adrenaline was pumping, I was probably more excited than all of my customers to see something like that. I was on a high for the rest of the day.

I've got loads of friends and colleagues in the wildlife photography industry that haven't seen or photographed any behaviour like this before, so to have it on record and as a photograph is quite amazing and really quite pleasing.
I think sea eagles preying on birds of this size probably happens more often than we think but to see it and to actually photograph it, that's what is so unusual, to witness and see it up close, was truly phenomenal.
He explained that he monitors the population on the island for the Highland Raptor Society, adding that Skye is so good for seeing them due to the fact there are now about 25 breeding pairs.

I've had a fascination with them since seeing one for the first time when I was about 12, and it's never gone away. For such big birds, they are so agile, so powerful, and so fast.
Skye is such a unique landscape and habitat for them and there's such a density of eagles you've got to try really hard not to spot them.

Julia Wendall believed she was Madeleine McCann, who disappeared while on a family holiday in Portugal in 2007, due to similarities in their appearance and other alleged evidence.Years ago after a particularly challenging personal time in my life, an out-of-town friend privately pre-arranged with my Jackson employer for me to take a day off from work so we could spend the winter day at nearby Reelfoot Lake. He thought of all of everything including a miniature vase of fresh flowers and relaxing classical music for me to enjoy in the car en route to the lake. When we arrived at Reelfoot Lake we drove down lane after lane looking for eagles. As we spotted the eagles by day and waterfowl at sunset, snow began to fall. It was truly a memorable moment. Both of us were silent, thanking God for such beauty. Then my friend, who had been there for me through many personal storms, popped open a bottle of fine champagne and we toasted to our magical day and to better times ahead.

Fast forward 20 years or so. Just as “Buddy” in Truman Capote’s “A Christmas Memory” said “it’s fruitcake weather” to her young seven-year-old cousin as her breath smoked the windowpane, a longtime friend wakes up on a cold, cold morning and says “Lyda Belle (that’s what he calls me), it’s a Reelfoot Lake day.”
We get up early in time to enjoy a country ham breakfast at the Lakeview Dining Room across from the lake. Then we wind our way down narrow lanes surrounded by waterfowl, always on the lookout for eagles, which are such majestic birds. It is an almost surreal experience!
