Join us for the weekly Wellness Lab, hosted by COLA Student Wellness Coordinator Maggie Wilhite on Wednesdays from 5-6pm in RLP 1.304C (in the Glickman Conference Center)from August 23 through November 29.

Each week we’ll explore a different aspect of wellness as it relates your experience as college students, whether it’s coping with test anxiety, making social connections, or mindfulness and self-compassion. We’ll bring in guest speakers, and we’ll also learn about wellness resources on campus. You can drop in for one session or come to all of them – whatever works for your schedule. Snacks will always be provided, and on occasion we'll offer cookies, tacos, or COLA swag! Hope to see you there.

You'll be able to share your perspective on the challenges of maintaining your well-being as a UT student, and you'll have the chance to contribue meaningfully to our feel-good events and programming. The Common Read provides a shared experience of intellectual and community engagement by bringing students in the college community together to read and discuss one text and its themes. This year the selected text is All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis. Program development is in progress, with plans to distribute books by the end of fall 2023. Spring will be full of events, discussions, and other offerings around the subjects explored in this powerful, inspiring collection of works by women writers.

SHARE Support Specialists are UT Austin students who have “been there” and are motivated by the desire to connect, reduce stigma, and support peers navigating similar challenges. SHARE peers facilitate private conversations, community circles, and SHARE communities around a variety of topics by co-creating intentional, judgment-free spaces for peers and facilitators alike to share validation, coping strategies, growth, and authentic connection.

Thrive helps you make small changes in your routine that have powerful long-term impacts. You will find short videos of UT students sharing their own stories and interact with activities designed to help you apply these concepts to your own unique experience.

THE Center for the Edge has written extensively about how the world is changing, and about the implications and impact of this change on corporations. We have framed the deep structural shifts afoot and practices that institutions can adopt to thrive in the world to come. Now, this report addresses practices that individuals—not just leaders, executives, and top athletes, although many of their practices are relevant, but all of us—may need to adopt to thrive in this world.

We know that the world is changing rapidly, both in terms of broad, global trends that are driving business and the more immediate space around our day-to-day lives. Mimicking the exponential pace of change in the underlying technologies, the options available to us to meet our needs and pursue our goals are evolving rapidly and often unpredictably. In some ways this makes us richer and more empowered than ever. In some ways it unsettles us. This is one paradox of life in the 21st century: The world changes rapidly; our basic needs as humans, not so much. In some important ways, we struggle to keep up with the very world we have created and continue to create. It is a time of great—and increasing—stress.

We already feel the tension today: the sense of boundless options (for some) and the awareness of limited time (for most); the sense of having just missed something and the fear of missing more; the thrill of seeing a car 3D printed and the unease of wondering which jobs will remain for us in the age of intelligent machines; the hyper-connection and loss of connection; the expectation of on-demand everything and the appeal of slow, bespoke, handmade.

One of the fundamental shifts that we now face is the shrinking of time spans, in large part due to exponential technological change coupled with the instantaneous propagation of ideas and information across a connected world. What used to take decades now takes years; what took years takes months; months, weeks; weeks, days; days, hours; hours, minutes. In the institutional environment, this shift is disrupting established businesses and business models, but it has also created a new set of businesses and business models better adapted to the faster (and accelerating) pace.

We, as individuals, are also experiencing this shift. For our parents, an education lasted a whole career. Now, it may last 5–10 years.1With the accelerating pace of change, the relevance and validity of the ability to “know” a stable stock of knowledge is diminished while other abilities, such as creativity, empathy, and the ability to read context, become more important. Our children will truly have to take lifelong learning seriously, continuously upgrading their skills. They will likely transition to completely new fields of study and employment more than a few times in their careers. Like institutions, we too will need to develop new practices and capabilities that are adapted to the times.

Amid these pressures of a new, modern world, people have turned to some old, and very old, practices.
